What is Soft Toy?

Plush toys or stuffed toys are made of plush fabrics and other textile materials wrapped with various fillings. They are soft, fluffy and cute. They are usually made in the shape of animals, but there are also human-shaped plush toys.

Benefits of Soft Toy for Babies

Developing Sensory Skills
A baby will learn things about their environment and surroundings using their senses. Soft toys will help introduce them to new textures and will at the same time teach them about colors and sizes. Keep in mind that though they are young, their brains are like sponges, they will be able to learn from everything they touch.

Emotional Growth
Babies can also feel emotional and also experience stress. Since babies are still in the process of discovering everything about the world around them, they may feel scared and overwhelmed at times. Soft toys will offer them comfort and familiarity when they feel uneasy and afraid.

Social Skills
As children grow, one game that they all will seem to play is pretend. It is during these games of pretend that they will mimic real-world social interactions with their stuffed friends. They will be able to adjust to making friends later on because of these interactions.

Helps Them Manage Their Emotions
As children grow older, they will experience their own share of frustrations and will sometimes even have temper tantrums! Soft toys and plush animals will help them reduce these feelings and stressful emotions.

How to Safely Produce a Soft Toy

Carry Out A Risk Assessment On Your Toy
Do this first, it will shape how you develop your concept, make you consider the potential risks and put in steps to avoid them. In Europe it is a requirement of the Toy Safety Directive that a risk assessment is carried out and can be made available to the authorities on request.

Avoid hard eyes and noses
It is difficult to fix these completely safely, and they are prone to being pulled off and eaten! Much better to embroider eyes and other features and avoid any choking risk.

Choose suitable fabrics
Fabrics with long pile are not recommended for use on soft toys for babies under 12 months. Whilst there is no data to show that the release of fibre or pile is a choking hazard, and these fibres are outside the scope of the small parts requirements of all toy safety standards, pile release is one of the most common complaints from customers as it is a commonly perceived choking hazard. Felt fabrics are also a problem for the under 3s as they often fail pull tests and the washability requirements, again a perceived choking hazard. All fabrics need to be capable of meeting flammability and be colour fast.

Ensure toys’ safe construction
Seam strength can be a problem on soft toys and split seams can result in stuffing coming out and posing a choking hazard. Ask your supplier about their seam allowance and stitch density. Check they operate a needle policy and that all toys pass through a metal detector.

Consider components and attachments
Any components such as rattles or bells must be enclosed in a separate cloth bag before being inserted into the toy. Any attachments such as bows need to be attached firmly and ribbon ends heat sealed to prevent fraying. If the toy has a pull cord (loose or looped) ensure that they meet the length requirements of the relevant standards.

Source safe fabrics
Easier said than done when one considers that most of the fabrics used in soft toys are purchased from the open market. Unless you have the utmost confidence that your supplier buys in pre-tested or certified fabrics (such as the Oeko Tex standard) pre-production testing might be the only way to ensure that your fabrics do not contain harmful chemicals. The list of requirements is quite onerous – fabrics must not contain azo dyes or formaldehyde and the supplier must not use flame retardants. If plastic materials or parts are included these must be free from cadmium, phthalates and organotins. Fabrics also need to meet the chemical requirements of EN71 part 3 (2013), EN71 part 9 and REACH in Europe and the ASTM F963 in the US.

Stuffing Materials
In the US and Canada, manufacturers need to be licensed in order to supply stuffed toys to these markets. Ask your supplier if they have the necessary licenses if you are selling to the US or Canada – the product will need to bear the license number and comply with specific labelling requirements. Stuffing materials should be clean and hygenic and not recycled.

Make Sure the Labelling is Correct
Soft toys need to be safe for children under 3 so small parts are not permitted and it is not possible to use the small parts warning. In Europe, soft toys must bear the CE mark, wash care instructions, and the producer’s name and address details. The US also has specific labeling requirements – it is worth asking your safety lab to advise on the correct labeling for your product as markings are specific according to which countries you are selling in.

Use a reputable supplier
Ask your supplier what accreditations they have – a good supplier will have a quality management accreditation such as ISO 9001 and an ethical audit such as ICTI or SMETA. Your supplier’s commitment to maintaining and improving standards in their workplace is a good indication that they will produce quality products.

A Sense of Security
Stuffed animals provide a sense of security and comfort for children. Holding a stuffed animal close can help relieve anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. In stressful situations, such as doctor visits or the first nights away from home, a familiar stuffed animal can provide essential emotional support for the child.

Developing Social-Emotional Skills
Stuffed animals help children express and understand their emotions. Children often identify with their stuffed animals and attribute emotions and feelings to them. By interacting with their stuffed animal, children learn to express their own emotions and understand those of others. Stuffed animals can also serve as a tool to develop empathy and compassion towards others.

Stimulating Imagination and Creativity
Stuffed animals encourage children to let their imagination and creativity run free. By playing with their stuffed animal, children create stories, imaginary worlds, and adventures where they can explore their creativity. This ability to imagine scenarios and solve problems is essential for cognitive development.

Fostering Independence and Decision-Making
Stuffed animals offer children the opportunity to make decisions and develop their independence. By taking care of their stuffed animal, children learn to assume responsibilities and make choices. For example, they decide when their stuffed animal should sleep, eat, or rest. This decision-making prepares them for making more significant decisions later in life.

Developing Communication Skills
Stuffed animals can help children develop their communication skills. Children often talk to their stuffed animals, and in doing so, they learn to express themselves and use language. Additionally, stuffed animals can serve as conversation companions for children learning a new language, helping them practice and strengthen their language skills.

The Role of Stuffed Animals in Transition and Adaptation
Stuffed animals also play an important role in moments of transition and adaptation in a child's life. When faced with changes, such as starting school, moving to a new home, or the arrival of a new family member, children can find comfort and stability in their stuffed animal. This constant presence helps them better manage changes and adapt to their new situation.

Stuffed Animals and Attachment Formation
Stuffed animals can also play a role in forming attachment bonds between children and those around them. By attaching to a stuffed animal, children learn to establish relationships of trust and love with others. Moreover, the attachment bond with a stuffed animal can serve as a model for forming healthy relationships with others throughout life.

Stuffed Animals and Separation Management
Stuffed animals are often used to help children cope with the separation of their parents or loved ones. In these difficult times, the stuffed animal can become a symbol of comfort and continuity, reassuring the child that they are loved and safe despite the distance separating them from the person dear to their heart.

Stuffed Animals and the Development of Emotional Autonomy
Stuffed animals also help children develop their emotional autonomy. By taking care of their stuffed animal, children learn to manage their emotions and comfort themselves. This ability to self-soothe is crucial for their emotional well-being and self-confidence as they grow.

Stuffed Animals and Education in Social Life
Finally, stuffed animals can serve as an educational tool to teach children important social values and norms. For example, parents can use stuffed animals to teach children politeness, sharing, patience, and kindness towards others. Stuffed animals can also be used to address more complex topics, such as diversity and inclusion, by introducing characters from different cultures and backgrounds.
