What is Carousel Ride?

A carousel ride, also known as a merry-go-round, is a classic amusement park attraction that consists of a rotating platform with seats attached to it in the form of horses, chariots, or other animals and creatures. Originally powered by hand or animals and later by steam or electricity, carousels are designed to spin around a central axis while the individual seats rise and fall in a circular motion, creating a sense of controlled thrill and nostalgia for riders.

Benefit of Carousel Ride

Timeless Appeal:
One of the primary benefits of carousel rides is their timeless and universal appeal. These rides have been entertaining people of all ages for over a century, making them a classic and iconic attraction that resonates with people across generations. The nostalgia associated with carousels can attract visitors who want to relive cherished childhood memories or introduce the experience to the next generation.

Inclusivity:
Carousel rides are designed to accommodate riders of all ages and physical abilities. They are often suitable for children, teenagers, adults, and even seniors. The accessibility of carousel rides makes them an inclusive and family-friendly attraction, allowing people of various ages and mobility levels to enjoy the experience together.

Low Intensity:
Carousel rides are typically low-intensity attractions, making them a suitable choice for individuals who may not be interested in or physically capable of riding high-thrill or adrenaline-pumping rides. This lower intensity allows for a gentler and more relaxed experience, making carousels ideal for a broad audience, including young children and seniors.

Safe and Stable:
Safety is a top priority for amusement park operators, and carousel rides are renowned for their stability and safety. Riders are securely seated on stationary, ornate animals or seats that move in a gentle, predictable motion. This stability reduces the risk of motion sickness or discomfort, making carousels a dependable and safe option for visitors.

Social Interaction:
Carousel rides promote social interaction and bonding among friends and family members. Multiple riders can share the experience by selecting adjacent animals or seats, allowing for conversations and laughter while enjoying the ride. This social aspect enhances the overall guest experience and creates lasting memories.

Artistic and Aesthetic Appeal:
Carousels are often intricately designed and adorned with beautifully crafted animals and ornamental details. These artistic features add to the visual appeal of the attraction and contribute to the overall ambiance of the amusement park. Many carousels are considered works of art in their own right, drawing admirers of craftsmanship and design.

Photo Opportunities:
Carousel rides provide fantastic photo opportunities for visitors. The visually appealing, brightly colored animals and the rotating motion make for stunning and Instagram-worthy shots. Many riders and their families take photos before, during, and after the ride, creating lasting mementos of their visit to the park.

Child-Friendly:
For families with young children, carousel rides are often the first introduction to amusement park attractions. They serve as a gentle and non-intimidating stepping stone for kids who may eventually graduate to more thrilling rides as they grow older. The whimsical animal designs and familiar, slow-paced motion make carousels particularly appealing to young children.

Location Flexibility:
Carousel rides can be installed both indoors and outdoors, providing flexibility for amusement park operators. This versatility allows parks to offer the attraction year-round, regardless of weather conditions. Indoor carousels can be especially popular during inclement weather or in regions with extreme seasonal variations.

Cost-Effective:
Compared to high-tech or extreme thrill rides, carousel rides are often more cost-effective to purchase, operate, and maintain. Their durability and longevity contribute to a solid return on investment, and they can remain operational for decades with proper care and maintenance.

Operational Flexibility:
Carousels offer operational flexibility that is advantageous for amusement parks. They have relatively low maintenance requirements and can run continuously throughout the day without the need for extended downtime. This reliability ensures that visitors can enjoy the attraction consistently, and it minimizes operational disruptions. Additionally, carousels can be adapted to accommodate seasonal or holiday-themed variations, enhancing their appeal during special events or celebrations.

Community Engagement:
Carousel rides often foster a sense of community engagement and participation. Local residents and schools may use the carousel for special events, fundraisers, or educational outings. This community involvement can enhance the park's relationship with its local surroundings and contribute to a positive reputation in the area.

History of Carousel Ride

Oldest predecessor of carousels comes from 6th century Byzantium. People then made rides from baskets that were tied to a pole in the center and that would carry the riders. But real inspiration for modern carousels were cavalry games and jousting of 12th century Europe and Asia. Horsemen of that time played games on jousting competitions in which a group of horsemen would ride in a circle and throw to each other breakable balls full of perfume which needed a great skill.

This game (called “the little batle” - in Italian garosello and in Spanish carosella) changed in 17th century and from the on horsemen tried to spear small rings that were hanging from poles overhead and rip them off. Cavalry ended the practice of jousting but cavalry games remained and commoners started to participate in them. At that time appeared the first simulation of carousel for children with wooden horses.

The carousels became bigger and the first one started appearing in late 18th century when they started spreading in central Europe and England where they became popular at fairgrounds. The first platform carousel was made in 19th century. They were called dobbies and had a platform that rotated with the animals and chariots fixed on it and was operated manually.

The first steam-powered carousel was invented by Thomas Bradshaw in 1861 and was a part of the Aylsham Fair. Frederick Savage began making his carousels in 1870 and invented now classical mechanism that made carousel horses go up and down like they are galloping. Soon, modern carousels crossed the Atlantic and became very popular in United States until the beginning of the Great Depression. When the Depression passed they slowly returned but never to such glory which they once had. Today there are many variants of carousels and few from the golden era still work after reparations.

The earliest known carousel that worked in America was in Salem, Massachusetts. It worked in 1799 and was known as “wooden horse circus ride”.

The oldest operating platform carousel in United States is Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. It is designed and constructed in 1876 by Charles Dare.

Father of Gustav Dentzel, one of the pioneers of carousel-making in the United States, also made carousels but in Germany.

Carousels and roller coasters are two oldest amusement rides that we still use.

Another American carousel pioneer Charles I. D. Looff also built California's famous Santa Monica Pier.

Not all carousels have animals as seats. Some have swings, some have cars, and some even have sails.

The greatest carousel in the world is one located at the House on the Rock. It has 269 hand carved carousel animals.

Carousel horses have basically three stances: they can have all four legs on the ground and are called “standing figures”, they can have two back legs on the ground and two in the air (those are called “prancers”), and they can have all legs in the air which then are called “jumpers”. “Jumpers” also move up and down.

Wooden carousel horses were rarely made from one piece of wood. Central part was often made out of wooden panels connected with wooden block and then shaped. That made a hollow body onto which head, legs, and tail were then attached.

Basics of Carousel Ride Operation

The carousel revolves around a stationary center pole made of metal or wood. An electric motor drives a small pulley that is controlled by a clutch for smooth starts. This pulley turns a drive belt and a larger pulley that turns a small-diameter, horizontal shaft. The end of the shaft is a pinion gear that turns a platform gear. The platform gear supports a vertical shaft that turns another pinion gear and final drive gear attached to the support beams of the carousel, called sweeps, which extend outward from the center pole like the ribs of an umbrella and support the platform, horses, and riders. The sweeps hold cranking rods that are turned by small gears at the inner ends that are driven by a stationary gear on the center pole. Horse hangers are suspended from the cranks, and as they turn, the horses move up and down about 30 times per minute. A typical carousel platform with horses and riders may weigh 10 tons and be driven by a 10-horsepower electric motor. After the motor's revolutions are reduced by the series of gears, the riders on the outer row of mounts will gallop along at about 5-11 miles per hour.

Carousels, with colorful figures attached to a revolving horizontal mechanism, have amused the masses since the end of the 1700s. By 1800, carousels were advertised as amusements as well as an activity that got the blood circulating. After the Civil War, a number of merry-go-round manufacturers started up businesses and popularized the carousel.

How to choose different types of Carousel Ride

Classic Carousel:
Classic carousels feature beautifully crafted, hand-painted animals such as horses, often with intricate designs. They offer a nostalgic and traditional experience, appealing to families and younger children.

Double-Decker Carousel:
Double-decker carousels have two levels of animals or seats, providing higher capacity and a visually striking appearance. They often feature a mix of animals on both levels and can accommodate more riders.

Character-themed Carousel:
These carousels feature characters from popular cartoons, movies, or storybooks. They can be highly appealing to children who recognize and relate to their favorite characters.

Spinning Tea Cup Carousel:
Unlike traditional animal fairground carousels for sale, spinning tea cup rides offer seated cups that spin individually as well as rotate around a central axis. These are often whimsical and cater to a wide age range.

Miniature Carousel:
Mini carousels are smaller in size and designed for younger children. They typically feature smaller animal figures or vehicles and are suitable for toddlers or preschool-aged kids.

Themed Carousels:
Consider a carousel that fits a specific theme or era. For instance, a medieval-themed carousel could feature dragons and knights, appealing to a fantasy-loving audience.

Interactive or Modern Carousels:
Some carousels incorporate interactive elements, such as moving seats or the ability for riders to control the height of the animals. These offer a unique and engaging experience.

FAQ

Q: How does a carousel ride work?

A: Nowadays, this is usually powered by an electric motor, but traditional Victorian carousels used a steam motor. The motor drives a small pulley to turn the carousel and move the horses. A clutch ensures a seamless start to the proceedings. The small pulley turns a drive belt on a larger pulley.

Q: How do carousel horses go up and down?

A: Horse hangers are suspended from the cranks. As the cranks turn, the horses move up and down, mimicking a gallop. Before the introduction of gears and cranks, carousel horses would travel around in a circle but could not move up and down. Animals or people pulling ropes often powered the machines.

Q: How long does a carousel ride last?

A: 2 to 3 Minutes
An average ride length is 2 to 3 minutes. The speed of the ride is low in order to keep centrifugal force low because the faster it turns the more centrifugal force the ride will have.

Q: Why do carousels go counter-clockwise?

A: Because most people are right handed, these carousels turned in counterclockwise rotation to target the brass ring which was hung up at the outside. This direction became accepted for carousels in most countries – the origin of the anti-clockwise direction in roller skating rinks.

Q: What is the average speed of a carousel?

A: The platform rotates under motor power in the middle and can move up and down. The velocity of a carousel ride is about 5 rounds a minute. An average ride is 2 to 3 minutes. The speed of the ride is low to keep centrifugal force low because the faster it turns the more centrifugal force the ride will have.

Q: What is the center of a carousel called?

A: The early rings were brass, then only the special ring was brass, now all of the rings are steel with a brass plating. Centerpole: Large wooden or steel pole standing tall in the center of the carousel mechanism. Holds the whole weight of the moving carousel. It usually sits on a large base with diagonal supports.

Q: How much weight can a carousel hold?

A: Each Carousel horse has a maximum weight limit of 175 pounds. Our Swan Seats have a maximum weight limit of 600 pounds total.

Q: What kind of wood are carousel horses made of?

A: Almost all new wooden carousel horses are made of Philippine mahogany or other soft tropical woods. This wood is easily chipped and shows radial cracks. Unfinished Philippine mahogany is dark red to light brown in color with very dark brown or black pits and streaks.

Q: What animals are on a carousel?

A: These figures often take the form of horses, but can also include other animals such as lions, tigers, zebras, and even mythical creatures such as dragons and unicorns. The purpose of carousel animals is to provide riders with a visually appealing and exciting experience while riding the carousel.

Q: What is the law of motion in a carousel?

A: A carousel spins with uniform circular motion. Newton's First Law of motion states that an object moving at constant speed will continue that motion unless acted on by an outside force.

Q: How fast does a carousel go?

A: About 5 rounds a minute
The velocity of a carousel's rotation is about 5 rounds a minute. An average ride length is 2 to 3 minutes. The speed of the ride is low in order to keep centrifugal force low because the faster it turns the more centrifugal force the ride will have.

Q: What are the dots under the carousel?

A: Dot Indicators
They are represented by small circular dots located below the carousel slides. Each dot corresponds to a slide in the carousel, indicating which slide is currently active.

Q: What country invented the carousel?

A: Oldest predecessor of carousels comes from 6th century Byzantium. People then made rides from baskets that were tied to a pole in the center and that would carry the riders. But real inspiration for modern carousels were cavalry games and jousting of 12th century Europe and Asia.

Q: How does a carousel go up and down?

A: Nowadays, this is usually powered by an electric motor, but traditional Victorian carousels used a steam motor. The motor drives a small pulley to turn the carousel and move the horses. A clutch ensures a seamless start to the proceedings. The small pulley turns a drive belt on a larger pulley.

Q: What are the horses made of on a carousel?

A: Real carousel horses were usually constructed from basswood boards. They were created literally like a box, with a hollow underside to make them lighter and more manageable. The head and legs were added later.

Q: What are the two types of carousels?

A: Vertical carousels provide one of the most efficient and productive means of warehouse storage retrieval on the market today. Horizontal carousel retrieval units rotate around horizontally on a track, where vertical carousel retrieval units rotate vertically.

Q: How do you tell the lead horse on a carousel?

A: According to carousel legend, the lead horse of any carousel is always the biggest, most decorative horse. In many instances, this horse is a military or war horse. If a chariot is included in the carousel, the first horse right behind the chariot on the outside is the lead horse.

Q: Why are horses on a carousel accelerating?

A: The horses on a carousel or merry-go-round are accelerating because they are constantly changing their direction of motion. Acceleration is the rate at which an object's velocity changes over time. In this case, the horses are moving in a circular path, which means their velocity is constantly changing direction.

Q: Do all carousels go counter-clockwise?

A: Both mean the same thing; every carousel can be described as a merry-go-round, and vice versa. While European Carousel rides typically turn clockwise, their American counterparts usually spin counter-clockwise.

Q: What are the safety precautions for merry-go-round?

A: Merry-Go-Round Safety Tips
No standing while the merry-go-round is moving. No pushing or shoving allowed. Wait until it has come to a complete stop before getting on or off. Do not hang off the edge and hold on only with your feet.
